This Symposium is in cooperation with the 31st International Conference on Macroeconomic Analysis and International Finance (https://icmaif.soc.uoc.gr/). We invite contributions from participants to that conference as well as others so that this symposium can present a compelling vision of the most up to date research on the many challenges faced by central bankers from evolving global markets. The global financial system is undergoing one of the most challenging periods since the Global Financial Crisis. A combination of persistent inflationary pressures, elevated public debt, geopolitical conflict, rapid technological change, and the rapid rise of digital currencies has transformed the environment in which monetary policies operate. The weaponisation of finance, sanctions regimes, shifts in international reserve currency usage and restrictions on capital flows have introduced new dimensions of financial risk. This special issue of Economic Inquiry will focus on challenges faced by central banks in this fast-changing environment.
The Guest Editors welcome any contributions on this general theme which employ theoretical and/or empirical methods as well as strongly policy-oriented submissions. The list of possible topics which might be covered by this issue could include the following themes (though this is not an exclusive list of what might be considered):
- Digital transformation and the future of central banking
