Transportation

There are several ways to reach Rethymno:
  • By air travel to Athens, and a connecting flight to the Cretan cities of either Chania or Heraklion, and then bus or taxi travel to Rethymno
    (approximately 1 hour)
  • By air travel from a European city directly to the Cretan cities of either Chania or Heraklion, and then bus or taxi travel to Rethymno
    (approximately 1 hour)
  • By air travel to Athens, and ferryboat from Piraeus (the port of Athens) to Rethymno

BY PLANE

Travelers can reach Rethymno by air travel from Athens via Chania or Heraklion. Flights between Athens and either of these cities take slightly less than one hour. Information regarding flights and time schedules can be located in the official sites of Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines and the site of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.

 

Land travel between Chania or Heraklion airport and Rethymno

Option 1

Transfer by taxi costs between 50 and 60 € from Chania Airport (60-70 € from Heraklion Airport). However, this cost can be divided if more than one passenger shares the taxi.

Option 2

After arriving at the airport, travellers can take a taxi to the bus terminal (KTEL) in the city of Chania or Heraklion. From either city buses leave for the Rethymno bus terminal approximately every hour between 5:30 and 21:00.


BY BOAT

There is a direct ferryboat service from Piraeus to Rethymno :

  • ANEK Lines have daily ferryboat service (ship: PREVELIS) which accommodate cars. Daily ferries depart at 20:00 from the port of Piraeus and arrive in Rethymno at 5:30 the following morning.
  • NEL Lines Ferries have ferryboat service (ship: AEOLOS KENTERIS) which also accommodate cars. Please visit the web page of the company for Schedules, Fares, Availability and On-Line Booking.

After arriving at the port of Rethymno travelers can take a taxi to their hotel.

Ferryboat connection between Piraeus and Crete is also available through Chania, Souda Bay (ANEK Lines - HELLENIC Seaways ) or Heraklion (MINOAN Lines - ANEK Lines). After arrival at the port of Souda (Chania) or Heraklion, travelers would choose between the bus/taxi options listed above.
